Rajesh M Selva, the director of Kamalhaasan’s Thoongavanam and Vikram’s Kadaram Kondaan is the director of The Game – You Never play Alone the first Tamil Netflix series for 2025.
The series has Shraddha Srinath in the lead role, supported by Santhosh Prathap, Chandini Thamilarasan, Sukanya Vasudevan, Dheeraj Kher, Syama Harini, Subhash Selvam, Bala Hassan R, Hema, Vasudev and Mukund K Rajesh.
Kavya (Shraddha Srinath) works in a high pressure job as an online game developer. Her husband, Anoop (Santhosh Prathap), is her co-worker on another project team, but they enjoy a good relationship at work and at home. Kavya is also an influencer with a large social media following. She experiences a spike in offensive and vulgar messages and severe trolling, but she shrugs this off – much to Anoop’s frustration.
When the abuse becomes more graphic and more frequent, Anoop persuades her to file a complaint with the local police.
However, two days before they could so, a major incident occurs that has far-reaching consequences for them, their extended family and the company that employs them.
The 7-episode web series takes the viewer on a tense trip filled with many surprises and many dramatic events.
The pace of the first episode could have been better, but this was probably because the viewer needed to be introduced to the many characters in the story. Thereafter, the pace picks up and maintains the suspense to the end of the last episode. There are many twists and turns to keep the shortest attention spans engaged. The story and scripting reflect the life and challenges of urban and suburban youngsters, and the series is clearly aimed at a Pan-Indian or international audience.
The Game: You Never Play Alone has some excellent acting performances. Shraadha Srinath breathes life into her character and was well cast for the role. Chandini Thamilarasi makes an imposing presence in the series as the fearless policewoman who is not swayed by the pressures around her.
Sukanya Vasudevan brings charm and finesse into her character. Hema, portraying Tara, does a good job while Syama Harini as Anne does enough to make her character memorable. Dheeraj Kher as Roshan and Bala Hassan as Gowtham are also impressive. Mukund K Rajesh, the younger brother of Super Singer-fame, Bharath, is my pick of the cast.
The scripting by Deepthi Govindarajan is good but audiences need to be warned that there is liberal use of expletives in the series.
Music by Simon K King is outstanding and plays a pivotal role in heightening suspense.
Cinematography by Akilesh Kathamuthu is good and he shines in the scene where natural lighting is used.
The story is penned by Rajesh M Selva and Karthik Bala. Rajesh M Selva has done well to keep the teleplay relatively taut and filled with many searching questions. The characters are realistic and easy to relate to because of the depth of the characterisation.
The Game: You Never Play Alone is currently streaming on Netflix and scores 7 points out of 10.
