Ramkumar Balakrishnan’s 2023 debut directorial Parking has won three national awards – Best Tamil Film, Best Screenplay for Ramkumar Balakrishnan and Best Actor in a supporting role for M.S. Bhaskar.

The Harish Kalyan-Indhuja Ravichandran starrer tells the relatable story of how the relationship between neighbours Eshwar (Harish Kalyan) and Illamparuthi (M.S. Bhaskar) change when one of them – Eshwar – buys a car. What starts off as a petty argument snowballs into something quite serious. The film was a sleeper hit and enjoyed widespread praise from critics.

In 2024, the screenplay was added to the Library of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (also known as the Oscars Library) and this was the first international recognition for the film.

The recipients of the 71st National Awards were announced on Friday 01 August, and the cast and crew of Parking were quick to respond on social media to the announcement. Praise has been pouring in from across the fraternity for M.S. Bhaskar who was well-deserving of the award, not just for his role in Parking, but because of his growing ability to silently dominate films through the strength of his acting.

In response, M.S. Bhaskar has dedicated his award to the Late Sivaji Ganesan. Bhaskar said that the legendary actor had provided an A-Z dictionary of acting through his performances and that he remembers Sivaji Ganesan in each of his acting roles.

G.V. Prakash was the other Tamil winner, winning the award for Best Music for his soundtrack and background score for Vaathi. His uncle, A.R. Rahman was among the first to take to social media to congratulate the 38-year old music composer. Prakash had previously won the national award for Best Music for his 2020 Suriya starrer, Soorarai Pottru directed by Sudha Kongara.

The 2022 Tamil short film Little Wings won an award for Best Cinematography.
