Multi-award winning Comedian Yogi Babu turns 40 today.

Babu was born on 22 July 1985 in Arani in Thiruvannamalai district.

He began his career as a writer and director of the popular Vijay TV comedy series Lollu Sabha where each episode was a spoof of a popular movie.

He then made his debut to the big screen in the film Yogi, a remake of the South African film Tsotsi directed by Sumbramaniam Siva and produced by Ameer in his debut as a lead actor. Babu subsequently was known as Yogi Babu.

After playing small roles in Karthi’s Paiya and Sundar C’s Kalakalappu, Yogi Babu’s first major comedy role was in Bhoopathy Pandian’s Vishal starrer, Pattathu Yaanai. He also had a small role in Shah Rukh Khan’s Chennai Express.

His roles in Sivakarthikeyan’s Maan Karate and Krishna’s Yaamirukka Bayamey were well received and he was cast in many films thereafter.

His roles in the multi-award winning film Kaaka Muttai and the Kathir starrer Kirumi brought him many glowing reviews.

2016 was a particularly successful year for him. Apart from the many films he acted in, he also won praise for his role in Vijay Sethupathi’s Aandavan Kattallai. His role in this film won him The Filmfare and SIIMA awards for Best Comedian.

Director Nelson Dilipkumar, in his directorial debut in Kolamaavu Kokila, gave him his big break by casting him in the lead role with Nayanthara. Yogi Babu won the Vikatan and SIIMA awards for Best Comedian for his role in Kolamaavu Kokila.

After another praiseworthy performance in Pariyerum Perumal that won him his second Vikatan Award for Best Comedian, Yogi Babu starred in his first solo lead role in Muthukumaran’s Dharmaprabhu.

In 2021 he played the lead role in Madonne Ashwin’s directorial debut, Mandela – a film that went on to win many awards and accolades, and lots of praise for Yogi Babu.

He went on to play the lead role in at least seven other films and in 2025 appeared as lead actor in Kuzhanthaigal Munnetra Kazhagam, Jora Kaiya Thatunga and R.K. Vidyadharan’s School.

Yogi Babu won his third SIIMA award for his role in Ravi Mohan’s Comali which marked the directorial debut of Pradeep Ranganathan.

His role in Pradeep Ranganathan’s 2022 film, Love Today, won him two more Best Comedian awards – from SIIMA and Vikatan.

Yogi Babu won his 4^th Vikatan Award for Best Comedian in Madonne Ashwin’s Sivakarthikeyan starrer, Maaveeran. This film was a huge hit and released in Japan on 11 July this year.

Yogi Babu also won the SIIMA Award for Best Comedian for his role in Rajinikanth’s Jailer directed by Nelson Dilipkumar.

In 2025, Yogi Babu has been in the cast of at least three hit films – Niram Marum Ulagil, Tourist Family and 3BHK.

His next release will be the Vijay Sethupathi-Nithya Menen starrer, Thalaivan Thalaivi. He is also in the cast of Surya’s forthcoming movie Karuppu.
