The Behind-the-Scenes video of Illaiyaraja’s Symphony Number 1 has generated a lot of interest – and for good reason. The short pieces of the symphony that appear in this short documentary promise something that looks poised to take the music world by storm.
The symphony, composed in 35 days, marks the first full symphony by an Indian composer although he has experimented with these elements in his Thiruvasagam album.
Illaiyaraja’s mastery of the different schools of music were evident in his albums How to Name it and Nothing But Wind which had a limited release in 1986 and 1988 respectively. This symphony is certain to bring him the international recognition he deserves
