Playback singer P Jayachandran passes away

P Jayachandran, the talented and popular singer of more than 16 000 songs, passed away on the evening of 09 January at the age of 80. Apart from many other awards, he won the national award for Best Singer in 1986. He has sung songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu.

He showed an interest in music in his childhood. Jayachandran met KJ Yesudas at a youth festival in 1958 where KJ Jesudas won the Best Singer award while Jayachandran won the award for best Mridangam player.

He made his debut as a singer in the 1967 Malayalam film, Udhyogastha. He made his debut to Tamil through MS Viswanathan through the 1973 film, Manipayal. Jayachandran shared a close bond with Illaiyaraja and this combination created many hit songs in the 1980s.

Jayachandran was undergoing treatment for cancer.
