KJ Yesudas turns 85 today

Playback singer and musician KJ Yesudas, who turns 85 today, has sung more than 50 000 songs in 13 languages across 6 decades. Apart from his many devotional albums, he has recorded more than 700 songs in Tamil.

He is one of the most awarded singers in India. He has won the National Award a record eight times, 5 Filmfare awards, 43 state awards from five Indian states, the Padma Shri in 1974, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2017.

He has sung songs in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Tulu, Hindi, Odia,Bengali, Marathi as well as Arabic, English, Latin, and Russian. He once recorded 11 songs in different languages in a single day.

Born a Christian, KJ Yesudas has now embraced Hinduism and has visited and sang in many Temples. He, however, remains a staunch Christian.

Yesudas was responsible for bringing Dolby Stereo to Indian music when he purchased the equipment and lent them to Illaiyaraja for the soundtrack of Rajinikanth’s 1978 film, Priya.

KJ Yesudas, has three sons – Vinod, Vijay and Vishal. Vijay is an accomplished and award-winning singer.
