There has been missed reaction to the announcement that Suriya’s Kanguva is one of the films in the running for the Oscars for Best Film (General category).
Whilst this is not a nomination but just a position on a long list, it is still an impressive feat and the only Tamil film on the list. The final nominations will be announced on 17 January 2025.
While fans of Suriya are celebrating this milestone, many critics (myself included) are wondering exactly what the current criteria for the Oscars could be as the film had major shortcomings.
While films like Garudan, Meiyyazhagan, Kottukaali and Maharaja should have been obvious choices for a shortlist, Kanguva has achieved what few would have expected.
