Song : Un Mugathai Parkalaiye
Film/Album : Padai Thalaivan (starring Shanmugapaandiyan Vijayakanth, the son of actor Vijayakanth.
Singers : Ananya Bhat
Lyricist : Illaiyaraja
Music : Illaiyaraja
Impact of the song
The dramatic introduction of the song merging into a soothing melody prepares the listener for heartfelt lyrics that are emotionally laden. This is reinforced by the layered interludes where one feels compelled to close one’s eyes simply to be immersed by the sheer power of the emotions that emanate from the music.
Vocal rendition
Ananya Bhat’s voice has a beautiful range, capturing in this song the angst and pathos of the words in a very earthy tone that is remarkably different from the way she renders love songs.
Lyrics
Simplicity and complexity coexist harmoniously in the way Illaiyaraja has penned the lyrics. Whilst not laden with metaphors, the imagery of the words are quite pronounced and the sentiments are therefore very easy to identify with.
Final Analysis
This is a soulful rendition with beautiful words and creative interludes although I felt that the rhythms and tune lacked the freshness of Illaiyaraja’s other recent songs. It is nevertheless a remarkable song which has earned itself a place in my playlist.
