Song : Poruthadhu Podhum
Film/Album : Viduthalai Part 2
Singers : Yogi B
Lyricist : Yugabharathi
Music : Illaiyaraja
Impact of the song
Who would have thought that there would ever be a song that would bring together Illaiyaraja and Yogi B? And who would have guessed that this unusual combo could create such magic! This is a hard-hitting song that has a disturbing realism to it.
Vocal rendition
Yogi B breaks away from his own style with a song that uses no English words. Yogi B clearly drives the song through a powerful rendition that oozes the pain, determination and focus of a down-trodden man seeking social justice.
Lyrics
The lyrics have a strong political leaning and there appears to be many references to slain LTTE leader, Vellupillai Prabhakaran. The left-leaning words are blatantly political, almost bordering on propaganda, and this – in my opinion – should not have been the case. It would be interesting to see how Vettrimaran has captured this particular song.
Final Analysis
A powerful song that could well become an anthem for political activists. Its emotionally charged lyrics could easily be quoted in other scenarios of human rights atrocities. Whether it is the tune, the words or the effective use of ostinato in the music, this is a song that has a profound effect on the listener and this grows with each successive listening.
