Review of “Anbe Diana”

Pari Elavazhagan – who made his debut as an actor and director through the 2024 film, Jamaa – is the star, writer and director of the modern romantic comedy Anbe Diana. The supporting cast includes Ramya Ranganathan in the female lead and the talents of yesteryear lead actress Roja and character artist Chetan. Social media star “Parithabangal” Gopi, Cell Murugan amd Nikhila Sankar are also in the cast.

Krishna (Pari Elavazhagan) lives under the tyrannical role of his mother, Sarala (Roja). He shares a close bond with his father, Bhaskar (Chetan) who has temporary bouts of limited freedom to speak his mind only when he is drunk. A casual remark that Bhaskar makes to Krishnan sees Krishnan determined to win over the heart of an Anglo-Indian girl, Magic (Rammya Ranganathan). Pulling himself out of the friend zone proves to be the smallest to his challenges as confusion, misunderstandings and foolish decisions throw the couple and their respected families into repeated challenges, often with hilarious consequences.

The best part of Anbe Diana is that the film never gives indication of being a serious film. It traverses sensitive topics, intense human emotion and real challenges with a cursory attitude that is playful and light, supressing the realism but greatly elevating the entertainment value.

Pari Elavazhagan shines as a writer and director, with the script loaded with wit, satire and even some strong emotions.  It is a complete transformation of genre, directorial style and handling from his first film and this transformation is also visible in his appearance in the film. He continues to exude a natural presence on screen and shows tremendous potential as an actor and director.

Raya Ranganathan delivers a spirited performance as Magic while Gopi delivers some delightful humour with a generous amount of satire.

The star of the film is undoubtedly Chetan who continues to impress audiences with his staggering versatility and the apparent ease with which he can slip into any character in any situation. His comedic timing throughout the film is masterful.

Roja handles her role well while Nikhila Sankar is in an impressive role as Thanisha.

Shelley Calist’s cinematography elevates the film through some very artistic shots and equally artistic framing.

Barath Sankar’s music is a major positive aspect of the film with his background score intelligently placed and expertly arranged. He also impresses with the film’s songs, making one year for more songs.

Anbe Diana is a lively, entertaining and unpretentious film that makes for delightful and engaging viewing.
