Sowcar Janaki, the star of 401 films and more than 300 stage plays passed away on Friday, 21 August 2026, less than four months before her 95th birthday.
In a remarkable career spanning an astounding seven decades across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi films, Janaki established herself as a discerning actress who could convincingly portray a wide variety of roles, unfettered by a male-dominated industry.
She was the winner of numerous state awards, the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu, Lifetime Achievement Awards from Filmfare and IIFA and the Padma Shri Award from the Government of India.
Janaki was born on 12 December 1931 in Rajamundry in the then Madras Presidency and completed her studies at Gauhati University in Assam.
She attained fame as a radio artist and made her acting debut at the age of 17 in the 1950 Telugu film Shavukaru. To avoid any confusion with V.N. Janaki (wife of M.G. Ramachandran), she was credited as Sowcar (Shavukaru) Janaki in her debut Tamil film, the 1952 film Valayapathi, where she played the lead role opposite G. Muthukrishnan.
Janaki remained selective in her roles. When actor V.K. Ramasamy penned and co-produced Nalla Idathu Sambandham, he cast Janaki in the female lead opposite M.R. Radha, with the legendary Prem Nazir also playing a pivotal role. The film showcased Janaki’s talent and opened new doors for her.
She first shared the screen with Sivaji Ganesan in the 1959 legal thriller, Aval Yaar, where she played the second female lead.
Her career in Tamil picked up in 1960 with Naan Kanda Sorgam and the year included the Sivaji Ganesan starrers, Chinna Marumagal, Paavai Villakku and Padikaadha Medhai.
Janaki enjoyed early blockbuster hits, sharing the screen with Sivaji Ganesan in Paar Magalle Paar, Puthiya Paravai and Pachai Villakku.
Janaki played a strong and daring character in her first film with M.G. Ramachandran, Panam Padaithavan.
Janaki also played the female lead in Neer Kumizhi, the directorial debut of K. Balachander, thereby starting a long and close bond between him.
Despite acting opposite megastars, Janaki remained selective in her roles, choosing strong and memorable characters which included Sivaji Ganesan’s 125th film, Uyrrndha Manithan and K.Balachander’s Gemini Ganesan starrer, Iru Kodugal.
Her other memorable roles opposite Sivaji Ganesan included Babu, Needhi and Manithanum Deivamaagalaam.
Her 1976 film Adhirshtam Azhaikiruthu was penned by lyricist Vaali and directed by A. Jeganathan. The film’s assistant director was Bharathiraja.
She began to play senior roles and appeared in major supporting roles in films like Sivaji Ganesan’s Pattakathi Bairavan, Rajinikanth’s Thee. Thillu Mullu, Kai Kodukkum Kai and Siva, Kamalhaasan’s Vetri Vizha, Prabhu’s Anand and Vairagyam, Ajith Kumar’s Thodarum, Arjun’s Thaayin Manikodi and in Karthi’s 2019 film Thambi, her penultimate Tamil film.
Janaki mentored many people within the film industry and had a warm and welcoming personality that made her a popular figure in the film industry. She was, however, outspoken and fearless in her views – attributes that heightened her respect among her colleagues.
Sowcar Janaki’s death leaves a massive void in the film industry.
