Pradeep Ranganathan’s latest film, Dude is an ultra-modern romantic comedy that bravely trivialises a lot of serious issues in a re-imagined modernised version of K. Bhagyaraj’s Andha 7 Naatkal.
Pradeep Ranganathan plays the lead role opposite Malayalee actress Mamitha Baiju in her Tamil debut. The supporting cast includes R. Sarathkumar, Rohini, Hridhu Haroon, Aishwarya Sharma, Dravid Selvam, Vinodhini Vaidhyanathan and Baby Anaisha Malik. There are also extended guest appearances by Neha Shetty and Satya Akala.
Dude is a zany, fast-moving and sometimes far-fetched tale of Agan (Pradeep Ranganathan) who is still recovering from being dumped by his girlfriend, Amudha (Neha Shetty). Agan runs a unique event-planning company with his first cousin, Kural (Mamitha Baiju).
Kural has harboured a crush on Agan and decides to declare her love, thus beginning a whirlwind of events that follow a zany sequence in which nothing is sacred, nothing is predictable and a few beyond belief. The best part of this is that the audience has been prepared for expecting characters and plots that stretch credulity to the maximum.
Debutante writer and director Keerthiswaran has weaved a comedy entertainer that will appeal particularly to the younger generation and is unafraid to shatter some holy cows in Tamil films. Because it is comedy, a lot can pass through and Keerthiswaran uses the opportunities with glee. The witty script naturally provides a sound platform for good acting performances.
Pradeep Ranganathan has shown rapid maturation as an actor, presenting brilliant comedic timing, but tempering this with powerful and emotive performances. It is a polished acting performance that is his best to date.
Mamitha Baiju’s natural beauty and comfort in front of the camera combine into a mesmerising act that almost matches Pradeep’s performance.
Sarathkumar seems to have entered a new side to his acting repertoire, playing intensely complex and unpredictable characters. He handles this challenging role with ease.
Hridhu Haroon as Paari does well and also shows great comedic timing.
Rohini’s talent and experience in the acting field comes through with her portrayal of Parvathy, Agan’s mother.
Dravid Selvam as Lux – Agan’s best friend – handles his role brilliantly, showing impeccable comedic timing when needed and incredible depth to his character in crucial scenes.
Vinodhini Vaidyanathan as the gynaecologist is the best of the others.
Keerthiswaran’s screenplay could have been trimmed in the first half, for the closing scenes to get centre stage. Nevertheless, Dude is a fresh offering on the Tamil cinematic landscape.
Nikketh Bommi’s cinematography in the first half makes creative use of framing and angles but very clichéd use of light. However, things refine in the second half.
It is a good performance from music composer Sai Abhyankar who handles the songs well and shows some creativity in the background score.
Despite some minor flaws, Dude remains an entertaining film that is well written and aimed at the current generation.
Dude scores 8 points out of 10.
