Abishan Jeevith, the director of last year’s hit film Tourist Family, makes his debut as a lead actor in the film With Love, written and directed by Madhan in his directorial debut.
With Love is a delightful modern romantic comedy with some occasional poignant and serious moments. It tells the story of Sathya (Abishan Jeevinth) who has been silently nursing a break-up in his first relationship to the extent that he has refused any alliances suggested by his sister. When he meets Monisha (Anaswara Rajan), he realises that they have a lot in common, but the commonality spells trouble for both of them. Both would have to find a way to shed the attachment of failed relationships before they can think of moving forward, and they decide on a novel way to do this.
It is a magnificent debut for Abishan Jeevinth as a lead actor. His comedic timing, powerful expressions and his ability to emote realistically gives the impression of a seasoned actor. Above all, he is instantly likeable with a magnetic charm and lovable mannerisms.
Anaswara Rajan follows his cue, with an affable portrayal of Monisha that is realistically written and convincingly portrayed. Her body language and facial expressions synch perfectly with her character and gives it charm and depth.
Kavya Anil as Anisha also exhibits charm, grace and powerful expressions to make her character a lingering one.
Saravanan portrays an interesting and layered character while RJ Ananthi’s portrayal of Sathya’s sister is realistic and masterfully portrayed. Good support comes from Ayaz Khan, Harish Kumar, Sacchin Nachiayappan and a small but effective role from Theni Murugan who portrays Sathya’s father. Watch out also for the delightful cameo appearances by M. Sasikumar and Kamalesh Jagan.
It is difficult to write a modern love story that retains the charm and innocence of true love without appearing outdated. This balance has been masterfully handled by writer and director Madhan in a script that fuses modern thoughts and attitudes with the purity of love. It’s practical stance on love appeals to young and old, while the characterization has incredible depth and realism.
Madhan’s scripting ensures that the exchanges reflect the complexity of each character, carefully avoiding melodrama or a pessimistic view of love. This is achieved through the organic humour that permeates the entire script, lightening what could have been a deeply sombre and morose film.
A major factor in the impact of the film is the contribution of music composer Sean Roldan, who has delivered one of his best performances to date, tuning trendy and catchy songs while exploring the maximum effect of his background score.
Shreyaas Krishna’s cinematography uses a varied palette and some brilliant use of light, showing the greatest artistry in the low light or natural light shots.
Produced by Soundarya Rajinikanth’s Zion Pictures and MRP Entertainment, With Love is a peppy, energetic, fun-filled and sometimes moving account of failed love and how to overcome it. It proves that moving on from a break-up need not mean wallowing in self-pity and wondering what could have been. Instead, it shows that a positive world view makes coping with disappointments in love a lot easier.
With Love scores 9 points out of 10 and will begin streaming on Netflix on 06 March this year.
