Jyothika made her debut to Tamil films in a small cameo in SJ Suryya’s Ajithkumar-Simran starrer, Vaali. The film won Jyothika her first Filmfare award for Best Female Debut and she soon clinched the Filmfare award for Best Actress for her role in Kushi – also directed by SJ Surya. Jyothika won the Tamil Nadu state award for Best Actress for her roles in Kushi, Chandhramukhi and Mozhi. Her role in Mozhi also saw her being nominated for the national award for Best Actress.
She met Suriya on the sets of Poovellaam Kettupaar and by the time of the release of Kaakka Kaakka they had announced their engagement and, with the release of Sillunu oru Kaadhal came their marriage date after completing seven films together.
After marriage, Jyothika returned to acting with 36 Vayathiniley, the success of which saw her star in films like Magallir Mattum, Naachiyaar, Kaatrin Mozhi, Raatchasi, Ponmagall Vandhaall, Jackpot, Thambi and Udan Pirappe. She now co-produces films with her husband Suriya. The couple have 2 children – a daughter, Diya and a son, Dev.
