M Ravi is the son of film editor, Mohan. He made his adult debut under the direction of his elder brother, Raja in the 2003 film, Jayam. Ravi had earlier made his acting debut as a child artist in a 1993 Telugu film produced by his father. Jayam, which also marked the directorial debut of Raja, was a huge hit and the film’s success saw him take on the title of the film as his own title and, until January 2025, was known as Jayam Ravi.

Initially under the wing of his brother, the duo worked on a series of successful films that were all remakes of Telugu films. The list includes M Kumaran, son of Mahalakshmi, Something Something Unakkum Enakkum, Santhosh Subramaniyam and Thilalangadi. Raja then penned an original story with Thani Oruvan which was a bigger success than his previous films. By this time, Ravi had firmly established himself in the film industry and had taken on a variety of roles in various genres, including ground breaking films like Vanamagan, Dhaam Dhoom, Peraanmai, Miruthan and Tick Tick Tick.

Ravi has proven his versatility through his many films, moving effortlessly from romance in films like Engeyum Kaadhal to action in Aadhi Bhagavan to comedy in Comali. Ravi also played a pivotal role in Maniratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 1 and 2. His last released film was Kaadhalikka Neramillai.

He is currently working on his first directorial, An Ordinary Man with Yogi Babu in the lead roles. His forthcoming films include Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, Karathey Babu, Genie, Bro Code and the sequel to Thani Oruvan.

Ravi was married to Aarthi and they have two sons, Aaarav who acted in Tick Tick Tick and Ataab. Ravi has filed for divorce, as he is currently in a relationship with singer, Keneesha Francis.

Ravi turned 45 today on 10 September.
