Vikram Prabhu’s latest film, Love Marriage, is an interesting but light-hearted look at serious issues concerning marriage, love and the roles played by parents, friends, relatives and the community at large. Sushmita Bhat and Meenakshi Dinesh play the female leads, supported by Ramesh Thilak, Gajaraj, Aruldoss, Muruganandam, Winner Ramachandran and special appearances by Sathyaraj and Rio Raj.
Vikram Prabhu plays Ramachandran, a not-so-young-man who travels to the town of Gobichettipalayam in search of a marital alliance. They are met with a warm welcome and all indications are positive of a happy union of the two families, but a turn of events force a closer look at the upcoming marriage, with more than a surprise or two in the offing.
Debutante writer and director Shanmuga Priyan makes an impressive debut, showing a strong penchant for humour even within a story that has high tension and high emotions. The pace of the first half could have been better, but a lively script and spirited performances compensate for this flaw.
Vikram Prabhu proves yet again that he is a versatile actor who does not rely on histrionics to portray intense emotion. Body language, tone of voice and emotive but subtle expressions are used to expertly convey the cauldron of emotions his character experiences.
There are solid performances from Sushmita Bhat and Meenakshi Dinesh, with the latter being more impressive.
Ramesh Thilak is in yet another outstanding performance as Guru, while Aruldoss handles his negative role well.
Winner Ramachandran as the father of Ambika and Radha (yes, you read that correctly) and Gajaraj as Ramachandran’s father both play their roles superbly.
Yasar as Guru’s assistant is the best of the others.
Sathyaraj, in a cameo role that is far too short, shows a delightful glimpse into his screen character from the 1980s and his role as Nagaraja Cholan from the film of the same title, the last directorial of Manivannan.
The songs by Sean Roldan are quite disappointing, barring the song Bejaara Aanen. His background score shows brilliance in many scenes of the second half.
It is a rather staid performance by cinematographer Madhan Christopher.
Shanmuga Priyan, who worked as a directorial assistant to Anand Shankar and Ra. Karthik makes a promising debut. With a tighter screenplay and greater attention to technical details, this film would have had a greater impact.
Love Marriage scores 7 points out of 10.
