P. Unni Krishnan was born on 09 July 1966 in Palakkad, Kerala. He moved to Chennai to complete his secondary and tertiary education.
He began his career in music at the age of 12 under his Guru, V.L. Seshadri.
He made his debut to film singing under the music of A.R. Rahman in the song Ennavalle adi Ennavalle from Shankar’s Prabhu Deva starrer, Kaadhalan. He won the national award for Best Singer with his first song.
He has recorded over 4000 songs in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada and is widely known for his many devotional albums.
His film music career has been hugely successful and he has sung for all major music composers of his time, including Illaiyaraja, Deva, Vidhyasagar, Yuvanshankar Raja, Karthik Raja, Harris Jayaraj, S.A. Rajkumar, Sirrpi, Bharathwaj, Mani Sharma, MM Keeravani and Hamsalekha.
Unni Krishnan is married to Bharatha Natyam dancer, Priya and they have two children. Their daughter, Uthara, won the national award for Best Singer for her first song, Azhage from Saivam.
