Murali made his acting debut in a lead roleunder his father’s direction in a Kannada film, but he only found fame after his debut to the Tamil screen in the 1984 film, Poo Vilangu. This film was a success at the box-office, but he achieved greater fame and recognition in his second Tamil role – the lead in Pagal Nilavu, which marked the Tamil debut of director Maniratnam.
Then followed a period of success at the box-office and he becamse hugely popular. This was to change in 1997 when he had six successive box-office failures.
Things turned positive again in the year 2000 with the success of Vettri Kodi Kattu , a film that won state and national awards. The year 2001 was also a productive and successful year for him.
Unfortunately, his career nose-dived thereafter because of poor script selection. His last appearance was in a guest role in the film Bana Kaathadi which marked the debut of his son, Adharva as a lead actor.

Murali passed away in the early hours of 08 September 2010 after suffering a heart attack.
