Sujatha Mohan Birthday Special

Sujatha Mohan was born on 31 March 1963. She achieved fame as a child (known then as Baby Sujatha) when she accompanied the great KJ Yesudas in many concerts across the globe. She recorded her first song when she was 12 years old – a Malayalam song for the film Tourist Bungalow.

She made her Tamil debut through the 1977 film Kavikuyil when Illaiyaraja got her to sing the song Kaadhal Oviyam Kanden. However, this song was omitted from the film, so her first released song was Kaalai Paniyil from the 1977 film, Gaayathri ­ – also for Illaiyaraja. She followed this with Oru Iniya Manathu from Johnny and Neeyillaatha Pothum from Illamai Kolam – also under Illaiyaraja’s music.

She then married Dr V Krishna Mohan on 09 May 1981after which she took a break from singing.

She returned to sing for commercials in the late 1980s for AR Rahman, so when the latter made his film debut in 1992, he got Sujatha to sing Pudhu Vellai Mazhai from Roja. This began the second innings of her singing career – a very prolific one. She has to date sung over 18 000 songs in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Badaga and Marathi.

Prior to the Covid19 epidemic, Sujatha developed a problem with her voice and it reached a level of severity where she was unable to even speak. She has since recovered well but has limited her singing.

She has won numerous awards, including the Kalaimamani in 2021, 6 state awards , 1 SIIMA award and dozens of others.

Her only daughter, Shweta Mohan, is also an accomplished singer.
