Actor, Writer, Director & Producer: Sundar C turns 57

Sundar C, whose real name is Vinayagar Sundara Vadivel Chidambaram Pillai, apprenticed under Manivannan before making his debut as a director in the 1995 Jayaram-Kushbu starrer, Murai Maaman.

He tsruck gold with his third film, the 1996 romantic comedy, Ullathai alli Thaa – a film loosely based on the 1958 Sivaji Ganesan-B Saroja Devi starrer, Sabash Meena. Ullathai alli Thaa had Karthik & Rumba in the lead roles and also featured Sundar’s mento Manivannan in an important role.

Sundar went on to direct more than 30 films, including Arunachallam (1997) with Rajinikanth and Anbe Sivam (2003) with Kamalhaasan.

In 2006 he made his debut as a lead actor in the film Thalai Nagaram written and directed by Suraj. Although not a hit, the film had a spin off in 2022 with Naai Sekar Returns as well as a sequel in 2023.

Sundar returned to directing in 2012 with the hit comedy, Kalakalappu – a film that spawned two sequels. He has also completed four films in the Aranmanai franchise.

Together with his wife, Kushbu, Sundar runs a successful production company that produces hits for the small and big screens.
