Amar Choudary, the youngest son of producer RB Choudary (Super Good Films), is better known by his screen, Jiiva. Born on 04 January 1984, Jiiva turns 40 today.
After beginning his acting career as a child star, he made is adlt debut playing the lead role in his father’s 50th production, Aaasai Aasaiyaai. This film and his second film – Thithikuthey – had a lukewarm response from the critics but is third film, Raam, brought him fame and critical recognition.
Raam featured one of Jiiva’s most spirited performances and this role saw become the first and only Indian actor to win the Best Actor award at the Cyprus International Film Festival.
Jiiva’s 2007 film, Kattradhu Thamizh, also received widespread critical fame. His 2009 film, Siva Manasula Sakthi – directed by M. Rajeshj in his directoral debut – was a huge commercial hit.
Two years later, he starred under KV Anand’s direction in the megahit film, Ko. This movie and Shankar’s Nanban, a remake of the Bollywoood hit, 3 Idiots, firmly established his market.
Through subsequent films like the superhero subject Mugamoodi and the romantic drama Neethane en Ponvasantham, Jiiva displayed his willingness to experiment as well as an ability to play a variety of roles.
After a hiatus in 2015, Jiiva returned to acting but, despite a wide variety in script themes, his films enjoyed mixed success with critics and at the box-office. Even the brilliantly executed 2024 film Black did not get the expected level of appreciation.
Jiiva will next be seen in Aghathiyaa which is written and directed by lyricist Pa.Vijay. The film is scheduled for release on 31 January 2025. Enjoy our special YouTube playlist of some of Jiiva’s hit songs.
