Inspired by the life of J.P. Chandrababu, K. Bhagyaraj’s sixth directorial. Andha 7 Natkal, is a moving love story with lots of humour and an unforgettable climax.
K. Bhagyaraj plays the lead role opposite Ambika, with Rajesh, Haja Sherrif (then a child star) and Kallapetty Singaram in the supporting cast.
The film begins with Dr Anandhan (Rajesh) marrying Vasanthi (Ambika). On their wedding night, Dr Anandhan hears about Vasanthi’s past and makes an unusual pact with her. The details of the pact, Vasanthi’s history and the moving conclusion makes up the rest of Andha 7 Natkal.
A significant portion of the film – the flashback scenes – features delightful comedy which forms an interesting juxtaposition with the scenes depicting the present. The flashback scenes are replete with Bhagyaraj’s self-deprecating humour and lots of laugh-out-loud moments which balance well with the tense emotions of the rest of the film.
None of the acting performances can be faulted, and it is difficult to single out any of them for the best acting performances. Bhagyaraj deftly maintains his accent throughout the film and emotes naturally. Ambika is in one of her best performances as Vasanthi, showing the two aspects of her character with detailed perfection. Haja Sherrif as Madhavan’s sishyan is an absolute delight and he too shows an ability to seamlessly switch to powerful emotions from comedic moments. Kallapetty Singaram is the best of the others.
Music by Mellisai Mannar M.S. Viswanathan is magnificent. All the songs are beautifully melodious and creative while his background score matches the soundtrack.
Andha 7 Natkal and its closing lines will go down as a landmark film in the history of Tamil films and is a film where the emotional impact (and comedy) are as strong today as they were when the film released.
Andha 7 Natkal was remade in Telugu as Radha Kalyanam, in Hindi as Woh Saat Din and in Kannada as Love Maadi Nodu.
Andha 7 Natkal scores 9 points out of 10.
