Moorthy was born on 25 July 1936. He is a qualified lawyer although he never practiced law. He also holds a PhD in Astrology.
He made his debut to films in C.V. Sridhar’s Vennira Aadai along with other newcomers Jayalalitha, Shrikanth and Nirmala. Like Nirmala, Moorthy also took on the title of his debut film before his name and has since been known as Vennira Aadai Moorthy.
He has acted in more than 300 films – mostly in comedy roles. He also played a role in the South African film Naallai produced by the Late Dees Pillay of Dravidian Productions.
Moorthy is also a film writer. His first film as scriptwriter was Maalai Sooda Vaa which was Kamalhaasan’s first fully-fledged lead role.
Moorthy became a major hit with South African audiences when he toured South Africa with Jaishankar.
Moorthy is married to actress Manimala who played the female lead in Vallavanukku Vallavan and Suhasini’s mother in K. Balachander’s Sindhu Bhairavi.
