Nelson Dilipkumar was born on 21 June 1984. He was to have made his directorial debut in 2010 with the film Vettai Mannan with T.R. Silambarasan, Jai, Deeksha Seth and Hansika Motwani in the cast, and Yuvanshankar Raja scoring the music. The film was halted after more than half was canned. There was an unsuccessful attempt to revive the project in 2017 with Anirudh Ravichander replacing Yuvanshankar Raja.
A year later, Nelson made his debut as a director through the dark comedy Kolamavu Kokila, which had Nayanthara and Yogi Babu in the lead roles. The film became a success and led to him directing another dark comedy – Doctor – which was produced by Sivakarthikeyan who also played the lead role. The film was a runaway hit and became Sivakarthikeyan’s first 100-crore grosser.
In 2020, Anirudh introduced Nelson to Vijay and the talks that followed saw the release of the film Beast two years later. The film was trolled by the critics but went on to become a box-office hit, crossing 300 crores at the box-office.
A year later, Nelson directed Rajinikanth for the much-hyped film, Jailer. Once again, the film was trolled by many critics, but became a commercial success.
Nelson is currently working on the sequel to Jailer and has also confirmed that he has sequels planned for Kolamavu Kokila, Doctor and Beast.
Nelson’s sharp sense of humour is infused into many of his scripts and his innovative promotion videos for Doctor and Beast set new industry standards. Despite his success and fame, he remains humble and unassuming.
Nelson turns 41 today.
