Silambarasan TR – or Simbhu – is the son of actor-writer-director-music composer T Rajender. He made his debut as a child star, appearing in his first film – Uravai Kaatha Kili – when he was only 1 year old.
He went on as a child star under his father’s direction in eleven other films before making his adult debut in 2002 in the film Kaadhal Azhivathillai – also directed by his father.
After mixed success with his subsequent films Dum, Alai, Kovil and Kuthu, he ghost directed his sixth film as adult lead – Manmadhan – which was a blockbuster hit.
After V.Z. Durai’s Thotti Jeya and KS Ravkumar’s Saravana, Simbhu wrote, directed and starred in Vallavan where he starred opposite Nayanthara and Reema Sen. The film was a hit at the box-office.
One of the biggest hits of his career was Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Vinaithaandi Varuvaaya, what would become a cult classic and that would see Simbhu reunite on screen with Trisha. The following year, he enjoyed another hit with the multi-starrer, Vaanam but his career began to totter thereafter.
Frequent disagreements with filmmakers and co-stars and frequently being late of absent on set began to take its toll.
It did not help things that Simbhu was also embroiled in other major controversies like those surrounding the release of Evandi unna Pethaan and the infamous Beep song which were both damaging to his image.
After the pandemic, Simbhu became a vegetarian, lost over 30 kilograms and said that spirituality would play a bigger role in his life.
He enjoyed another hit in 2021 with Venkat Prabhu’s Maanaadu and the films Vendhu Thanindhadhu Kaadu (2022) and Pathu Thala (2023) were moderate hits.
He will next be seen in Maniratnam’s Thug Life, sharing the screen with Kamalhaasan. Kamalhaasan is also the producer of Simbhu’s 48th film, an untitled film helmed by Desingh Periyasamy,
Simbhu is a talented dancer and an accomplished singer. He has also scored music Sakkai Podu Podu Raja and 90 ML and written several lyrics.
Simbhu turns 42 today.
