Arya, Aishwarya Lakshmi and Simran head the cast of Captain which is produced by Arya and directed by Tik Tik Tik-fame Shakti Soundarajan. Others in the cast are Harish Uthaman, Kavya Shetty, Raj Bharath, Gokulnath, Vincent Asogan and Adithya Menon.
Arya plays Captain Vetriselvan who leads a military team to investigate multiple killings in a formerly restricted territory on India’s border, accompanied by a scientist appointed by the Indian military, Dr Keerthi – played by Simran. They soon discover that they are dealing with a phenomenon new to humankind and that they would have to draw on all their resourcefulness just to survive.
The premise of the film is exciting enough and the story has enough depth but the film fails in its pedestrian script and the screenplay has far too many weak spots for a film with a running time of under 2 hours. This lack of detail in these essential aspects of the film have a visible impact on the film’s acting performances.
Arya does a commendable job, carrying most of the weight of the film on his shoulder. Simran makes a valiant effort in a somewhat different role but looks jaded and distant in many of her scenes. Aishwarya Lakshmi does not have the scope to impress while Harish Uthaman is the best of the others.
D Imaan’s songs are adequate with none of them reaching the standard one expects from Imaan. His background score, however, is exciting and varied and complements the screen tension perfectly.
Yuva’s cinematography shows a lot of innovation in his extreme high and extreme low shots. Yuva’s use of light is also commendable. Pradeep E Ragav’s editing is impressive in the combat sequences.
Captain has its fair share of thrills and the action sequences are very impressive. Its innovative theme must be commended but its weak script and screenplay have greatly reduced the impact of this action thriller.
Captain scores 6 points of 10.
