Tamil Cinema loses another Legend

M. Saravanan, the iconic film producer who was the driving force in AVM Productions and AVM Studios, passed away in the early hours of this morning – Thursday, 04 December.

Saravanan (86) had several health issues and was unable to walk for the last two years. His remains will be available for public viewing until 15h30 (IST) today.

Saravanan is survived by his son, M.S. Guhan – who took over as producer of films and TV shows under the AVM Banner. Saravanan’s granddaughters -Aruna Guhan and Aparna Guhan – are now actively involved in eth company.

Saravanan, born in 1939, is the third son of one of the pioneers of Indian cinema – A.V. Meiyappan – who founded AVM Studios and AVM Productions.

Saravanan took over the daily running of the business in 1958.

Under his leadership, AVM Productions had many major hit films  – including Naanum our Penn, Ramu and their 100^th film – Anbe Vaa. They were also behind other landmark films like  Mundhanai Mudichu, Anbulla Appa, Amma, Mella Thiranthathu Kathavu, Gemini, Sivaji: The Boss, Priyamaana Thozhi, Minsaara Kanavu, Vettaikaaran and Ayan.

M. Saravanan has also been widely credited as being a key figure in the shaping of the careers of Rajinikanth and Kamalhaasan, producing some of their iconic films like Nallavanukku Nallavan, and Thoongaathey Thambi Thoongaathey.

M.Saravanan’s influence on the Tamil film industry has earned himself a permanent and significant place in the history of Tamil cinema.
