Born as Chinnasamy on 17 July 1941 in Allingaram in the Theni District of Tamil Nadu, Bharathiraja braved poverty and hardship for much of his adult life before making his debut as a director in the Padhinaaru Vayadhiniley – a film that changed the course not only of Tamil cinema, but also of Indian cinema.
Padhinaaru Vayadhiniley had a cast headed by Kamalhaasan and Sri Devi, with Rajinikanth playing a small but memorable role as the film’s antagonist. The film shattered Indian cinematic conventions and effectively changed the way filmmakers and audience saw Indian films.
In a a career that spanned 47 years, Bharathiraja introduced more than a hundred names behind and in front of the camera lends. He mentored directors like K. Bhagyaraj, Manivannnan, Manobala, K Rangaraaj and introduced to the screen actors and actresses like Karthik, Radha, Radhika, Revathy, Pandiyan, Vijayan, Sudhakar, Priyamani, Sukanya and directed one of Sivaji Ganesan’s finest films, Mudhal Mariyaadhai. He also directed Kamalhaasan, Rajinikanth, Sathyaraj and had many of his films dubbed or remade into other Indian languages, including Hindi.
After making his first screen appearance in Kizhakku Pogym Rayil, as protagonist in Kallukkul Eeram and a memorable guest appearance in Dhaavani Kanavugal,he went on to play many memorable roles, sharing the screen with fellow director K. Balachander and actors Dhanush, Vishal, Sivakarthikeyan, Vijay Sethupathi, Suriya, Madhavan and Siddharth.
Bharathiraja was hospitalised in 2025 after suffering a prolonged problem with respiratory issues. He never really recovered from the condition, having clearly given up the will to live after the sudden death of his son, Manoj – an actor who is famous for his roles in films Alli Arjuna, Taj Mahal and Varushamellaam Vassantham.
Bharathiraja passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, 10 June 2026.
