Director Raju Murugan has had an interesting career. After a notable debut as a director through the 2014 film, Cuckoo, his second film – Joker –won the National Award and Filmfare Award for Best Film. His success dipped with Jiiva’s Gypsy and hit an all-time low with Karthi’s Japan. Now he has bounced back with the hard-hitting social drama, My Lord.

The film opens with a curious declaration of Muthuchirpi (M. Sasikumar) and his wife, Suseela (Kannada actress Chaithra J Achar in what was intended to be her debut to the Tamil screen) being legally dead. The events leading to this situation and the surprising resolution to this situation forms the rest of the story.

The vulnerability of the average person and the power that comes with affluence permeate much of Raju Murugan’s screenplay. The story examines the pitfalls of inequality in Indian society and the perceived dispensability of the lives of ordinary folk and those living below the breadline.

Sasikumar’s maturation as an actor, his screen presence and his obvious versatility continues to increase exponentially. Chaithra J Achar, whose first released film was BHK, delivers a brilliant performance as Suseela, expertly combining strength and vulnerability in her role.

Asha Sharath as Minister Sujatha Mohan delivers what is easily the most memorable of her roles, eclipsing even her rple in Papanasam.

Guru Somasundaram as the politically charged newspaper editor delivers a fiery performance. It is another credibly portrayed role by Jaiprakash in a new look, Ramkumar Prasanna, VJ Kemy and Vasumithra are the best of the others.

Sean Roldan’s background score is good and he shows a creative range in his soundtrack.

Nirav Shah’s cinematography maintains his own high standards, making masterful use of light and showing some unusual framing, most of which are indoor scenes.

My Lord examines deeply pertinent issues in Indian society and had the makings of a film with greater impact, but a reduced pace of the first half dilutes the attempt. The result is still an outstanding and memorable film.

My Lord scores 7 points out of 10.
