G.V. Prakash Kumar, born on 13 June 1987, is the son of G. Venkatesh and A.R. Reihana (sister of A.R. Rahman).
His first foray into the film industry was when he sang the opening lines of the hit song Chikku Bukku Chikku Bukku Rayilu from Gentleman which had music scored by his uncle, A.R. Rahman.
He later assisted A.R. Rahman and Harris Jayaraj, singing two songs in Anniyan (Kaadhal Yaanai) and Unnaale Unnaale (Hello Miss Imsaiye).
G.V. Prakash was only 16 when he made his debut as a music composer in the critically acclaimed Veyil, written and directed by Vasanthabalan and produced by director Shankar.
G.V. Prakash then went on to enjoy success with many albums, including Dhanush’s Polladhavan which marked the directorial debut of Vettrimaran. GV enjoyed praise and critical acclaim for his work in Selvaraghavan’s Aayirathil Oruvan.
In his first 10 films, GV had already composed for films starring Rajinikanth, Ajithkumar, Dhanush, R Madhavan, Arya and Prithviraj. His success has increased exponentially in recent times and earlier this week won a Vikatan award for his background score in Captain Miller, Thangalaan and Amaran.
GV has also scored background music for the Hindi film Gangs of Wasseypur. He also composed the first anthem of Sunrisers Hyderabad. His 50th film was Vijay’s Atlee directorial. Theri. He won an international award for best Music in Osaka International Film Festival for his work in Asuran. He went on to win a national award for Best Music in Suriya’s Sudha Kongara directorial, Soorarai Pottru, an album that also won for him the Filmfare Award for Best Music.
In 2013 he turned producer for the film Madha Yaanai Koottam directed by Vikram Sugumaran, a former assistant to Balu Mahendra.
He made his acting debut in the 2015 film, Darling although his first signing for an acting role was for the film Pencil.
GV also dubbed for the Tamil version of Mufasa where he lent his voice to the young Simba.
He was married to playback singer Saindhavi, having shared a relationship with her from their school days. They have been separated since September 2024.
GV’s forthcoming films include Dhanush’s Idly Kadai and Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi.
