Today marks the birth anniversary of director Rama Narayanan who was born 03 April 1949.
He wrote his first screenplay in 1976 for the film Aasai Arubadhu Naal. In 1977, he produced his first film – Meenakshi Kungumam – and made his debut as a director in 1981 through the film, Sumai.
His 50th film, Veeran Veluthambi had a script penned by M. Karunanidhi. The 1999 multi-starrer, Thirupathi Ezhumalai Venketesa marked Rama Narayanan’s 100th film.
Rama Narayanan was Tamil cinema’s most prolific director – In the 1980s, he was directing between 12 and 14 films per year. Many of these films were low budget entertainers with little regard to technical innovations, creative screenplays or intense acting. Instead, Rama Narayanan wanted his films to appeal to the masses and, in this, he was largely successful.
His last Tamil film was the 2013 film Arya Surya which had Powerstar Srinivasan in the lead role.
Rama Narayanan passed away on 22 June 2014 at a Singapore Hospital after suffering renal failure.
