The role of Lyricists in the success of a song has always been an under-recognized and under-appreciated one. Sigaram seeks to bring the much-needed recognition to our lyricists through our special features on their birthdays or birth anniversaries.
Chandrasekar is better known by his industry name Pirraisoodan and was born in Thirivarur district on 06 February 1956.
He was introduced to the film world by M.S. Viswanathan through the song Rasathi Rosapoo from the Rajesh-Lakshmi starrer Sirai (1984). Later, MS Viswanathan would confer the title Kavi Nyaani on Pirraisoodan for the speed with which he was able to write lyrics.
Pirraisoodan won the Tamil Nadu state award for Best Lyricist three times: Thayagam (1996), En Rasavin Manasile (1991) and Neeyum Naanum (2010).
Pirraisoodan has also scripted films like Sathriya Dharmam, Krodhan 2 and Shankar. He has also made brief screen appearances in films like Amaran (1992), Sathuranga Vettai (2014) and Annathey (2021).
He wrote lyrics for many music composers, including MS Viswanathan, Illaiyaraja and AR Rahman, penning the words to some of Tamil cinema’s much-loved songs – some of which are featured in our special playlist (See link below)
Pirraisoodan passed away on 08 October 2021.
