Charan is the son of the legendary SP Balasubramanyam. At the age of 10, he made his singing debut to films when he, together with his elder sister Pallavi, sang the introduction and chorus for the hit song Oh Nenje from Darling Darling. Charan had earlier recorded a song, Unakkoruthi, for the film Puniyavathi but problems with that film’s release date meant that the soundtracj for Darling Darling Darling released first.
His first recorded song as an adult was the song Deepangal Pesum for the film Devathai, a duet he sang with J. Sandhya, the niece of P Susheela to the music of Illaiyaraja. He went on to sing many songs under many music composers in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi.
He turned producer through the critically acclaimed film Unnai Saranadainthen. He has since produced nine films including Chennai 600 026 and its sequel, Naanayam andthe critically lauded Aaranya Kaandam for which he won the national award for Best Producer. He also won the Tamil Nadu state Award for Best Playback singer for Enakage Porandhaye from Pannaiyarum Padminiyum.
Charan turns 52 today. Enjoy our specially selected songs to mark the occasion. If the video is not automatically accessible, click on the button that states “CLICK HERE” to access the playlist.
